Indian Trail Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Is Digging Holes or Burrowing Underground Done By Possums?
If you look at possums, you might find them as intimidating, but they are very docile and passive animals. They are nocturnal, but they change their habits in winters and step out during the day. They are adaptable to the environment and manage to find their nests rather than building them from scratch. They look for abandoned nests of animals which could be in the hollow bark of tree, attic, garage or somewhere in the yard area. They are not very good at climbing (although they are good learners) hence their preference is to find a warm and cosy place at the ground level.
Why can’t possums dig?
The paws of possums are not sharp enough to allow them digging of holes. This is one of the reasons that they find for homes rather than building their own! If they knew how to dig and burrow then in winters they could have easily dug a hole for themselves! But unfortunately, that is not the case. Possums try to gather twigs, dry leaves and other nesting material to keep their den warm especially during winters but they don’t have ability to dig holes. You can say that this is a physical limitation for them!
What do they eat?
Opossums feed on road kill, trash bins and worms in the ground. They feed on roof rats but are scared away by cats, dogs and bears too! This means that if an opossum is feeding around and it sees a cat or dog nearby then it will immediately rush to the nearest burrow to hide. They are submissive and sense the presence of their predators from distance. They are keen diggers and might dig an inch or so to find the insects. Their primary food contains insects, reptiles, fruits, vegetables and pests like rats, mice etc.
In case you are feeling sympathy for these animals by reading the post then let us highlight that these animals are known for creating destruction in a short span of time. They defecate too often which makes the place stinky and disgusting!
Which animal could possibly be digging the holes in my yard?
So, if you see some holes in your yard then it could be because of moles, groundhogs or digging skunks. Possums climb and hang out on the branches and limbs of the trees and are not the culprits for the diggings in your yard. The digging and burrowing don’t entice them at all! If the holes that you see in your yard are shallow then they might have been dug by skunks and if they are deep and lead to tunnels then groundhogs or moles are invading the property!
Possums can spread diseases to children and pests at home as they secretly feed on the bird feeders and food items that you keep for your pests. If you have spotted possums in your yard then they might not be digging holes but you should take necessary steps to get rid of them. They are not hygienic and healthy for your residential setting!
